With a population of 14 million, Istanbul is an expansive city spanning two continents. Located on both sides of the Bosphorus, the narrow strait between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both physically and culturally. Istanbul is divided into many districts, several of which are a must-see for the ultimate in shopping, dining, and cultural experiences.
One of the best ways to experience and understand the vast richness and history of this impressive city is to take a cruise along the Bosphorus. From this vantage point, visitors will enjoy imagining what life was like, for example, in the amazing palaces of the Ottoman Empire. Of particular note is The Dolmabahçe Palace, which occupies a quarter mile of prime Bosphorus waterfront. Luxury waterfront homes, cafes, parks, shopping districts round out the view. And to see the Sultan Ahmed (Blue Mosque) from this waterfront perspective is to be further awed by its beauty. To feel the sweep of the Bosphorus bridge while boating beneath it is to appreciate the architectural engineering that went into the design and construction of this span. The Bosphorus is the energetic artery of Istanbul, and to cruise upon its waters is to feel the vibrant essence of this city deep within your heart.
Of particular interest to many is The Ortaköy, a neighbourhood whose roots trace back to the Ottoman era. Art galleries, clubs, restaurants, and eclectic shops make The Ortaköy extremely popular with both locals and tourists. Nestled along the Bosphorus, The Ortaköy is an ideal location for you to sip tea at a café, perhaps take a few photographs, and watch the ferry boats traverse the waters. The city’s size allows each visitor to find his or her own special place, a neighborhood that you can call your own.
In Istanbul, delight is around every corner. No matter your interests and passion–museum-going, enjoying fine cuisine, shopping for unique items, or appreciating the rich cultural traditions of music, Turkish coffee, and conversation, Istanbul will more than meet your expectations as an experience to remember for a lifetime.
Archeological evidence of settlement in the Istanbul metropolis goes back 3,500 years. The Greeks established the first city on the European side, and the Romans made Constantinople the seat of the Roman Empire back in 330 AD. Due to its strategic location as the only city in the entire world that straddles two continents, Istanbul has been a prize many have wanted as the jewel of their empire. As with any city established for thousands of years, there were periods of relative peace and prosperity, and times when the city saw its share of turbulence. A key turning point in the city’s history arrived when Sultan Mehmed II conquered the city after a 53-day siege after which was established the Ottoman Empire, which lasted until World War I. Then in 1923, Turkey became a democratic republic, led by the revolution’s hero, Ataturk. Our concierge at Sheraton Istanbul Maslak will be happy to arrange one of our Istanbul tours so you can see first hand the historical areas of our beautiful city.
- Sultanahmet-Old City: Essentially the Constantinople of the Roman, Eastern Roman/Byzantine, and much of the Ottoman periods, this is where most of the famous historical sights of Istanbul are located.
- Galata: Housing many of the nightlife venues of the city, this district includes Beyoğlu, Istiklal Street, and Taksim Square.
- New City: This is the main business district of the city with many modern shopping malls and districts such as Elmadağ, Nişantaşı, and Etiler.
- Bosphorus: Dotted by numerous palaces, parks, water-front mansions, and bohemian neighbourhoods, such as Beşiktaş and Ortaköy, this is the European bank of the Bosphorus
- Golden Horn: Here is the estuary that separates the European side into distinctive districts. Eyüp, with an Ottoman ambience, is located here.
- Princes’ Islands: What an excellent getaway from the city! The Islands encompass an archipelago of nine car-free islands—some of them small, some of them big—with splendid wooden mansions, verdant pine gardens and nice views—both of the islands themselves, and also on the way there.
